May 5, 2023
May 5th is also Red Dress Day (National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People). This is a day of remembrance and action to bring attention to the disproportionate and unacceptably high rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals in Canada.
On May 5th each year, families and advocates ask that you wear red to honor the lives of those who have gone missing or been murdered and to Call for Justice and systemic change to end this ongoing crisis. The red dress has become a powerful symbol of the movement, representing the missing women and the need for their voices to be heard, and never forgotten.
In Budget 2023 we allocated $125 million for the National Action Plan for
