Canada announces first Special Representative on combatting Islamophobia
January 26, 2023
Islamophobia is a concrete and daily reality for Muslim communities across Canada.
Our government has heard directly from impacted communities, and is stepping up its efforts in the fight against Islamophobia.
Today, January 26th 2023, our government announced the appointment of Amira Elghawaby as Canada’s first Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia.
Ms. Elghawaby will serve as a champion, advisor, expert, and representative to the Canadian government for the purpose of enhancing efforts to combat Islamophobia and promote awareness of the diverse and intersectional identities of Muslims in Canada.
This appointment reflects the needs of the community and what we heard during the virtual National Summit on Islamophobia held in July 2021.
This is an important step in our continued work to build a safer, more equitable and inclusive Canada, for everyone.
