We're delivering on our promise to ban harmful single-use plastics
December 20, 2022
Canadians want a healthy environment with pristine shorelines, parks, and waterways, free of plastic pollution.
That’s why our government is delivering on our promise to ban harmful single-use plastics, part of our comprehensive plan to keep plastics out of the environment and landfills.
As of today, we’re banning the manufacture and import of:
- Plastic checkout bags
- Plastic cutlery
- Food service ware made from or containing problematic plastics
- Plastic stir sticks
- Plastic straws
As of December 2023, the ban will extend to the sale of these items, giving businesses enough time to transition and to deplete their stocks.
Over the next decade, these regulations will cut the equivalent of over a million garbage bags full of plastic litter.
