Many Canadians are struggling with the rising cost of living. Last week, our legislation to provide rent supports to those who need it most became law. This means a tax-free payment of $500 to nearly 2 million low-income renters who are struggling with the cost of housing, including students and seniors.

Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home, but for far too many Canadians it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find one. During National Housing Week, our Liberal government is highlighting the steps we’ve taken to deliver. Under the Rapid Housing Initiative, which our government created, 4,500 affordable housing units will be built. This is in addition to the over 10,000 new affordable housing units already under construction across the country. We are making historic investments to put us on track to double housing construction over the next ten years. To help make housing more affordable, we’re also:

• Developing and scaling up rent-to-own projects across Canada;
• Creating a Tax-Free Home Savings Account that will give first-time buyers the ability to save up to $40,000 tax-free towards the purchase their first home;
• Banning foreign buyers from buying homes for two years;
• Taxing home flipping; and,
• Working with the provinces and territories to develop a Home Buyer’s Bill of Rights.
