Thursday, June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day
June 21, 2022
June 21st marks National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD), a time to honour the rich cultures, unique traditions, and important contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada. NIPD was first announced in 1996 by then-Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc, where June 21st was chosen as the date for NIPD due to the cultural significance of the summer solstice for many Indigenous Peoples and communities.
NIPD is an opportunity to not only acknowledge the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and allow space to reflect on the ways in which colonialism has and continues to affect Indigenous ways of life, but more importantly to celebrate the bright future and resiliency of Indigenous Peoples.
For the rest of Indigenous History Month, we continue to encourage you to participate in #IndigenousReads by visiting a local bookstore and picking up something by an Indigenous author.
