This year’s International Day of Pink is on April 13th. Every year, on the second Wednesday of April, people around the world wear pink in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQ2+ community and commit to fighting for equality and acceptance. The 2SLGBTQ+ community continues to face discrimination, bullying and violence, and while progress has been made, there is still more work to do. On International Day of Pink, we must continue to create a more inclusive and diverse world and stand up against bullying towards our 2SLGBTQ+ peers.
The International Day of Pink was sparked by 2 straight high school students from Nova Scotia, David Shepherd and Travis Price, who saw a gay student was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They intervened and decided to show solidarity by purchasing and asking the entire school to wear pink shirts a few days later. Their action inspired another group of youth volunteers at the Jer’s vision (now Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity), who founded International Day of Pink.
International Day of Pink is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, and all forms of bullying. Today and everyday, we celebrate diversity.
