Making Google and Facebook pay their fair share
April 5, 2022
Google and Facebook take 80% of all online advertising revenue, while displaying Canadian news content for free.
Tech giants must pay their fair share and contribute to our society. A free and independent press is essential to Canadian democracy.
That’s why today we introduced Bill C-18, the Online News Act, that will require the tech giants to fairly compensate publishers and journalists for the content shared on their platforms.
We’re creating a framework to ensure that Canadian publishers—big and small—can negotiate fair deals on more equal terms with the tech giants—the most powerful companies in the world.
Our approach is more transparent and more accountable to the public than other countries who’ve introduced similar laws.
Our government will always support quality, fact-based, and local Canadian journalism in a fair digital marketplace.
