Happy Pakistan Day!
Eighty-two years ago today, on March 23rd, 1940, thousands of Muslims from all over the Indian sub-continent gathered in Lahore. They had one dream, one vision and one mission.
A resolution was passed, calling for the creation of a separate homeland for Muslims in British India.
Exactly 16 years later, on March 23rd, 1956, Pakistan adopted its first constitution, during the transition of the Dominion of Pakistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, making Pakistan the world's first Islamic republic.
Pakistan Day or Pakistan Resolution Day, also known as Republic Day, is a public holiday celebrated annually on March 23rd in Pakistan, and by the Pakistani diaspora around the world.
I invite all members of this House and all Canadians to join in congratulating the people of Pakistan on the celebration of these two seminal dates in the creation of Pakistan.
